Italia tour 2025: Palermo

INFO: I am writing this today, 19th of April. But the dates I were in Sicilia were from 12th to 18th.

Ciao! The date finally arrived, my Easter holiday has started and so has my grand Italian adventure. I will detail short what the plan has been all along, or to be honest almost nothing has been planned for this trip, I just knew that I was going to Italia for many days to explore.

The only thing I did know, in fact, was that my first stop would be the grand island of Sicilia. I was selecting between landing in Catania or Palermo, but since my airline didn’t have anything free to Catania, the choice became Palermo. Not that I wouldn’t have gone there anyway!

Stuck in Norway for an extra day

A backside of not having planned much, is that since I took my vacation already on Friday the 11th to be able to leave Norway as soon as my workday was over. All flights in direction Sicilia were full, so I kind of got stuck one day extra in Norway, oh well, it happens.

The day before I left, I was started to feel a bit sick, and I was super nervous that I would spend parts of my vacation sick. Of course, that still may happen, but hopefully I can avoid it! Also, I was stupid enough to tire myself out the first day of vacation, by going to the gym, going for a long walk with my best friend, and also being up late. Oh well, sono un scemo, which is Italian for me being a fool.

Departing to Stockholm and Palermo

Allora! Early morning, I woke up, knock, knock, knock on the door, just kidding! ( I had to). Up early, still feeling sick, going to the airport, freezing! An hour later, I was in Stockholm, and there I spent four hours doing, well absolutely nothing. Buying honey tablets and a coffee.

Four hours plus three more hours where I was sleeping, I finally landed in Palermo. NOW the vacation could finally begin.

I will say immediately that I have had company for my entire stay in Sicilia, and that was almost the whole reason for starting in Sicilia to begin with. The other reason being that I have had a desire to visit Sicilia for a long time. For privacy reasons I won’t go deeper on this for now.

Comunque, we went from the airport and into Palermo city centre, this time I didn’t book a hotel, she did, and she had a perfect spot selected. Close walking to everything, but as I arrived late, we just went to the room, relaxed and went out to eat. Later on we went back to sleep.

The day in Palermo

Early morning, no, I will stop, as this is also a lie, it was not early morning. To be honest I do not remember when we got up and out, anyway, breakfast and out for a Palermo walk.

First we went to the port, to trovare il mare, which is because I love the ocean and always try to stay near the ocean. The area seemed nice, and in the same vibe as Aker brygge in Oslo seem to be more for the rich, then this place were the same. As a backpacker, naturally I do not dress very nice, just practical. I felt like shit when we walked around the people all dressed up, but hey, it was enjoyable because I honestly don’t give a damn about it, haha. Sorry for the language.

We spent quite a long time at the port, found a spot with a “nice” view, okay it maybe weren’t so nice, but it became a core-memory. Afterwards we went to find some food and drinks, in a noisy but yet cozy area we enjoyed the music of karaoke Italians. And also the classic sound of Italian traffic, I have now learned that it is not a stereotype, it’s the truth.

Cattedrale Di Palermo

Until now we have basically done it the way I usually do it, just walking around and seeing whatever we see along the way. But she knocked some sense into me by asking what I want to see, and since it was already noon, it was a really good idea. It would really be a shame if I missed out on one of the big things.

Allora, we went to the cathedral of Palermo. A great cathedral with beautiful exterior and interior, and also a walkable rooftop. I love views, so of course we had to find out a way to get to the rooftop.

This would be a good time to tell that my company doesn’t speak much English, and I do not speak much Italian. Quindi, this trip in Sicilia also became a great learning trip, and it’s really amazing how the communication works its magic.

Anyway, we got to the roof, and it was a fantastic view of the city. We also spent some time in the garden area of the cathedral, before tiredness got to us. We went back to the hotel to relax a bit, after that we went out to have dinner. This is also a culinary trip, so I tried a lot of new types of food during this stay.

End of the day, the first proper day in Sicilia and in Palermo has been great! Tomorrow it will be for Messina!
